往余少时,获交于立斋薛先生,尝与余通书,所手钞笥袭者亡算,时时窃好之,弗置也。嘉所为诸疡书甚具。凡病癃肿、痈疽、挛 、 疠,经先生延医,亡不立已。然卒因疡死,故人多訾先生,以为执泥补法,不知合变,嗟乎!冤哉其言之也。始余识先生时,妇病肿疡濒死,先生竟活之,语在医案中。当是时,诸医抱药囊环立,咸愕吐舌,不敢出一语,而先生率意信手,日剂一二,不动声色,坐而收功,如充国金城之兵,方略豫定,其正翕张,动中成算,即是以例。先生之医,殆所谓神解者,而世乃以执泥訾之,岂非贵耳贱目者众邪!语云:尺有所短,寸有所长。必若所云,是越人至今存,而轩、岐不古也,嘻!亦 矣。昔扬子云作《太玄法言》,桓谭以为必传,且谓世人亲见子云,故轻其书。当时博闻如刘歆,亦恐后人用覆酱瓿。然则世之所为訾先生,亡乃类是也乎。乃余则以为医顾业精否耳。业诚精矣,当必有排众说而独是之者,一时知不知亡论也。先生没诸版刻,渐次流散,余悉为购得之。而先生从子师颜,复手《外科枢要》一编示余,盖不独补诸刻之所未备而立,凡举要深,足为疡家指南,因属雠订并刻之。余固亲见先生者,方愧不能为先生之桓谭,而师颜之克世家学,则刘歆之虑吾知其免矣。夫先生诸他著作,世多有其书,不论所为,序本枢要论所隆庆辛未夏五既望, 李沈启原道卿撰。
