往余少时，获交于立斋薛先生，尝与余通书，所手钞笥袭者亡算，时时窃好之，弗置也。嘉所为诸疡书甚具。凡病癃肿、痈疽、挛 、 疠，经先生延医，亡不立已。然卒因疡死，故人多訾先生，以为执泥补法，不知合变，嗟乎！冤哉其言之也。始余识先生时，妇病肿疡濒死，先生竟活之，语在医案中。当是时，诸医抱药囊环立，咸愕吐舌，不敢出一语，而先生率意信手，日剂一二，不动声色，坐而收功，如充国金城之兵，方略豫定，其正翕张，动中成算，即是以例。先生之医，殆所谓神解者，而世乃以执泥訾之，岂非贵耳贱目者众邪！语云：尺有所短，寸有所长。必若所云，是越人至今存，而轩、岐不古也，嘻！亦 矣。昔扬子云作《太玄法言》，桓谭以为必传，且谓世人亲见子云，故轻其书。当时博闻如刘歆，亦恐后人用覆酱瓿。然则世之所为訾先生，亡乃类是也乎。乃余则以为医顾业精否耳。业诚精矣，当必有排众说而独是之者，一时知不知亡论也。先生没诸版刻，渐次流散，余悉为购得之。而先生从子师颜，复手《外科枢要》一编示余，盖不独补诸刻之所未备而立，凡举要深，足为疡家指南，因属雠订并刻之。余固亲见先生者，方愧不能为先生之桓谭，而师颜之克世家学，则刘歆之虑吾知其免矣。夫先生诸他著作，世多有其书，不论所为，序本枢要论所隆庆辛未夏五既望， 李沈启原道卿撰。
