The University of Michigan， Ann Arbor， frequently referred to as University of Michigan (UM， U-M， or U of M) or simply Michigan， is a public research university located in Ann Arbor， Michigan， United States. Founded in Detroit in 1817， the university has since moved its flagship campus to Ann Arbor. The University of Michigan has adaptive equipment， note takers and tutors available for student use. Along with allowing class accommodations， the university encourages student advocacy and the collaboration of professors and students to help address what best suits the needs of the student.The university has very high research activity and its comprehensive graduate program offers doctoral degrees in the humanities， social sciences， and STEM fields (Science， Technology， Engineering and Mathematics) as well as professional degrees in medicine， law， and dentistry.

System： The university is divided into 12 undergraduate Schools and Colleges， each of which has its own set of requirements and guidelines for admission and degree achievement. At the undergraduate level， students are allowed to take a flexible program of study that allows them to focus in one of several areas of study. The University of Michigan"s most popular undergraduate programs include engineering， business， music and theater and liberal arts. Michigan"s graduate programs include the highly ranked School of Education， College of Engineering， Law School， Medical School， Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy， School of Public Health， School of Nursing and the Taubman College of Architecture and Urban planning. The University of Michigan Hospitals and Health Centers is ranked among the top hospitals in the country.
Student life： The University of Michigan boasts one of the best college towns in the country： Ann Arbor， only 45 minutes from the city of Detroit. Freshmen are guaranteed housing but are not required to live on campus. Ann Arbor， Michigan offers expansive night life options for students of the university， including numerous venues for live music， dining and entertainment. It also offers students an opportunity for indoor and outdoor activities throughout the entire year.
