Duke University is a private research university located in Durham， North Carolina， United States. It was founded in 1838 by Methodists and Quakers in the present-day town of Trinity and moved to Durham in 1892.In 1924， tobacco industrialist James Buchanan Duke established The Duke Endowment， at which time the institution changed its name to honor his deceased father， Washington Duke ( The Dukes， a Durham family who built a worldwide financial empire in the manufacture of tobacco products and developed electricity production in the Carolinas， had long been interested in Trinity College). The university is well known for its sizable campus (nearly 9，000 acre)， research， athletics and Gothic architecture.Duke university boasts world-class business， engineering and medical schools， as well as a prominent athletic department known as the Blue Devils. It also is considered by many to be academically the leading private university in the South of United States. The University"s sports teams are called the "Blue Devils，" who are usually clad in the school"s colors of blue and white. Aside from basketball， it features teams in several other sports， including football， baseball， volleyball， tennis， swimming， field hockey， golf， lacrosse， rowing， wrestling and track and field.

System： The university contains ten academic colleges and schools， including the Trinity College of Arts and Sciences， the Fuqua School of Business， the Nicholas School of the Environment as well as schools of medicine， law and engineering. The university also contains eight academic and research institutes， including the Duke Global Health Institute， the Duke Institute for Brain Sciences and the Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions. Duke University has two campuses， known as East Campus and West Campus. Undergraduates at Duke spend their first two semesters on East Campus， a separate campus for first-years only. The intimacy of East Campus allows first-years to bond as a class as they begin their Duke education.The undergraduate degrees take four years to complete， and the Masters degree takes an additional two years.
Financial aid： Duke University guarantees that it will provide full financial aid for any portion of the cost of tuition beyond students" ability to pay. When students apply for financial aid， the university uses an equation that takes into account their families" assets and income， determining how much students" should be expected to contribute to the cost of tuition each year.
